Chapter Three

“Blob Warrior.”  The voice crackled over the loudspeaker.  “Blob Warrior, please report to Staff Room B.”

The room was dark.  There was a movement and a slight groan from a bed in the corner as the loudspeaker repeated its request.  Suddenly, the sliding doors opened, providing some light, and Zero glided in.  Zero was unique.  He had no arms and legs.  Instead, he was shaped like a ball and was surrounded by an energy field.  He had the ability to hover and move at any height off the ground.

Zero chuckled.  “General’s looking for you.  Maybe he thinks you’ve been sleeping to late since you started your vacation.”

“That’s the truth,” the Blob Warrior answered.  “After that mission, we should have all taken a nice vacation.  Have you heard from Blobett or Wonon lately?”

They walked down a corridor of the Blob Defense Headquarters.  All around them, blobs in uniform rushed by.

“Last I heard, she was taking him to Cowstar for a visit.  Wants to give him some culture,” Zero remarked.  “Wasn’t Junior going there too?”

“Yes,” the Blob Warrior replied with a smile.  “My little brother, for some strange reason, volunteered to deliver supplies to their farmers.”

“What was he carrying?  Seeds?”

“No.  Fertilizers.”

The doors slid open and the two entered Staff Room B.  The Blob General rose from his chair at the head of the conference table and motioned them to come further inside.

“Blob Warrior, Zero, I’m glad you decided to join us,” he said.

As the Blob Warrior took his place at the table, he suddenly felt uneasy.  The only other member at the table was Commander Beltic, the stern and cold leader of the Blob Elite Force.  Two soldiers stood guard at a nearby door.  The Blob Warrior could tell that something big was happening.

“So, General,” Zero commented.  “Why the meeting?”

The lights flickered back on.

“An excellent question,” the Blob General remarked.  “Perhaps we should get straight to the point.  One hour ago, the Sphinx was shot down over Zim by an Inzect warship.  We believe it was Commander Flybor’s personal vessel.”

“The Sphinx?” the Blob Warrior shockingly asked.  “That’s my brother’s ship!”

“Now you can see why I called you here.”

“And the two spies, General?” Zero questioned.

“Blobett and Wonon,” came the reply.

“Survivors?” the Blob Warrior said slowly.  “Were there any survivors, sir?”

“We don’t know,” the General answered.  “We did receive several transmissions that the ship was going to crash on the planet surface.  I’m sorry.  I wish I could tell you more.”

“We have a potentially embarrassing galactic situation here,” Commander Beltic coldly remarked.  “We should place our grief aside.  A recon team of Blob Elite soldiers could find the Zimian weapon and neutralize the Inzects.”

“And what about the blobs down there!?!” the Blob Warrior angrily asked.  “Are we suppose to leave them behind!?!”

“Destroying the weapon, if one exists, is my primary concern,” Beltic replied.  “The Blob Elite is best suited for this kind of operation.”

“Wrong, Commander,” the Blob General said.  “The Blob Warrior will lead our rescue mission to Zim.  He will find our agents and any survivors and destroy the Zimian’s secret weapon.”

“I must protest the decision!” Beltic cried.

“Your objection is noted,” the Blob General remarked as he turned toward the two soldiers at the door.  “Bring them in,” he ordered.

The doors opened and the soldiers motioned the three individuals outside to enter.  One was a large, muscular frog dressed in camouflage, fatigue army pants.  He was holding a laser rifle in one arm while adjusting a red bandanna on his head with the other.  He was followed by a pale, white bull, who appeared rather timid, carrying a communication helmet.  Finally, a panda bear entered, wearing black leather pants and a vest with a white shirt.  The bear had a laser pistol on his hip.

“Allow me to introduce your rescue team,” the Blob General said.

“Mercenaries,” Beltic grumbled.

The Blob General shot Beltic a harsh stare.  The Blob Warrior and Zero approached the three creatures standing before them.

“This is Frog,” the General said, gesturing toward the amphibian.  “Former soldier in the Waterell special forces.  You won’t find a better fighter or soldier in the system.”

“Welcome aboard,” the Blob Warrior said, shaking Frog’s webbed hand.

“You can count on me, sir,” Frog replied.

“Moo-Moo.  Computer data genius and expert in communications.  He’ll be vital once you arrive on Zim.”

The Blob Warrior took Moo-Moo’s hoof.  “It’s good to have you.”

“You can spare me a flattering introduction, General,” the panda bear laughed as he leaned against the wall.  “I’ve already pulled this blob’s backside out of the fire more than once.  Remember Alliance Seven?”

“How could I forget?” the Blob Warrior smiled, clasping his friend’s paw.  “Panda, where have you been hiding this past year?”

“Had to lay low for a while,” Panda said.  “Seems like some rabbit pirates have gotten me in a case of mistaken identity.  I tried looking up the gang, but everybody was always busy hopping around the galaxy fighting the bad guys.”

“When Blob Defense contact him, Panda immediately volunteered his services,” the Blob General added.

“When I heard about Junior…,” Panda remarked.  He never finished his thought.  “The China Queen is fueled and ready.  I hear Zim is a nice place to visit this time of year.”
